The initial appointment will be an assessment designed to gather information that will help determine the best course of action for treatment. You will have the opportunity to share why you are seeking services and express your hopes for treatment. We will also gather important background information, such as family and relationship history, healthcare history, history of treatment, etc. During this time you will be provided with information about what treatment may look like and you will also have the opportunity to ask any remaining questions.
While the initial appointment is an assessment primarily designed to guide further treatment, you are not required to return should you decide during the appointment that our services are not right for you! We want you to feel confident and hopeful about therapy. However, we do encourage clients to attend at least 3-5 sessions in order to adjust to your therapist and gain a full understanding of what therapy is really like.
You are welcome to attend the intake session alone, with a support person, or as a couple if you’d like to grow together. Talking with your support person early in treatment may help us to better understand and help you. It can also assist them in learning how to best support you outside of therapy.
In the first session, you will have a chance to warm up to the process. We will inquire about your life in general so that you feel comfortable before shifting to the concerns that brought you to therapy. Over 1-3 sessions in which you choose the pace, we will listen to your story, assess your symptoms, and your therapist will share her perception of your concerns from her therapeutic lens. Our goal is for you to feel understood, normalized, and hopeful. If you do not feel this way, please let us know.
After assessing your concerns through talking and formal assessments, we will support you in identifying your therapy goals, and together we will create a personalized treatment plan to achieve them. We will touch base about the treatment plan and progress every 4-8 sessions to make sure we’re on track.
The duration of therapy can range from a few sessions to a few years, depending on the presenting problem. While treatment for a single situation or goal can require as little as 3 sessions, more complex problems can require more time in treatment to reach deeper layers at your core. In the first session, we will also discuss the appropriate frequency of sessions based on your symptoms and goals.
